If you are considering starting a franchise in New Zealand, it is natural that you will be looking at the overall landscape.

A big part of that landscape is the bodies who work within the franchise industry in this country. Of course, you have the national membership body, which in New Zealand, is then a member of a continental and global orgranisation.

Here is some more information about those organisations.

Franchise Association of New Zealand (FANZ)

Around since the mid-90s, FANZ is New Zealand’s franchise membership body for franchisors and franchisees. Membership is also open for advisors and members of the public with an interest in franchising.

Its goal is to set standards for franchising, share experiences and promote best practices in this area.

All FANZ members must adhere to rules set out in the organisation’s Code of Practice and Code of Ethics. For example, a franchisor who is a member must include the following::

  • A detailed Disclosure Document for prospective franchisees
  • Providing a seven (7) day cooling off period
  • A commitment to best practice franchising

Asia Pacific Franchise Confederation

FANZ is a member of The Asia-Pasific Franchise Confederation (APFC).

This is an association of National Franchise Associations around the Asia Pacific region. Established in 1998, this association includes associations from the following countries:

  • Australia
  • China
  • Hong Kong
  • India
  • Indonesia
  • Japan
  • Korea
  • Macau
  • Malaysia
  • New Zealand
  • Philippines
  • Singapore
  • Taiwan
  • Thailand
  • Turkey
  • United Arab Emirates

World Franchise Council

Formed in 1994, The World Franchise Council (WFC) is a non-political association of more than 40 national franchise associations from around the world. The Franchise Association of New Zealand is a member of both the WFC and APFC, both of which are non-political groups.

The WFC’s key aim is to promote franchising and best practices within the sector on a global level.
